"This Woman's Work" (Maxwell)

She was unconscious in his arms. He knew that he should put her down, concern himself with getting the jumper back home and making sure that they weren't followed. But the only thing that mattered right then was the woman in his arms.

Her hair was longer - that was the first thing that he noticed. A shaking hand moved to trace the lines of her face, lines he had never let himself touch before. Her skin was warm and full of life, everything he had never dared to hope for. Even has he had kept searching for her, he had told himself not to get his hopes up. He tried his best to convince himself that she was dead, so that maybe there was a chance it wouldn't destroy him when he found it to be truth.

But he had found her. He had found her and they were able to get her out in one piece. McKay had scanned her body and found that the nanites were gone. There was some kind of weird signature coming up, but he honestly didn't care about that. He'd let them figure that out back on Atlantis. He had her, and she was safe at last. He'd never let her go again, that was for damn sure.

He couldn't believe how much he had missed her. How hard it had been to breathe once she was gone. He hadn't realized just how tangled up they were.

"I've got you," he whispered, brushing the hair from her face. "I've got you, 'Lizabeth."

--------------------------------------------

"Landslide" (The Backbeats)
This wasn't the first time that Kolya had taken her at gunpoint and tried to use her as a shield, but John was going to make damn sure it was the last. He wasn't sure he could survive another one, quite honestly. His heart was pounding until he was sure it would break right out of his chest, and he knew it was half miracle and half training that his hands were steady.

"KOLYA!" he screamed, the familiar echo trying to drag him back to that stormy night.

"I'm leaving, Lieutenant Sheppard. And Doctor Weir is going to secure my escape."

"Like hell she is," he growled.

He wasn't sure how he came to the decision, staring at Elizabeth as fear coiled inside of him like a den of snakes. But he let his eyes lock with her, praying that she understood.

And then he fired.

She went down with a scream, but he forced himself to fire two more shots at Kolya. Without his human shield there was nothing to protect him, and he fell to the ground just inches shy of the Stargate.

But John was already on his knees by Elizabeth's side, putting pressure on the wound in her upper arm.

"I can't believe you shot the hostage," she teased, voice tight with pain.

He shrugged, guilt sweeping over him. "Yeah, well..."

"Did you get the bastard?"

"Yes, ma'am," he said firmly.

She nodded, taking his hand and squeezing it tightly. "I forgive you, then."

"Ain't No Sunshine" (The Lighthouse Family)

There wasn't any beer on Atlantis. Their allies had their own versions though, and he was fine settling for those. Anything to stop the shaking in his hands and the screams in his head.

He never let it interfere with his duties. The job was the only thing he had left some days, and he wasn't going to lose that. Besides, she had been the one to believe in him, to trust him enough to save them all, and he wasn't going to let her down now.

Even if she was gone.

They never left him alone. He guessed he should have been grateful for their concern, but her face was the only thing he could focus on. He'd sit in a jumper bay staring out at the water, Ronon or Teyla or even Lorne beside him. They didn't speak. They didn't ask him to stop. They just sat there, understanding in their eyes.

It reminded him too much of her.
---------------------------------------

"Gifts and Curses" (Yellowcard)

Elizabeth ran through the halls with Teyla right behind her. She could hear Ronon and Lorne somewhere in the distance, shots echoing against the walls as the bullets ricocheted. She didn't care. She wasn't the leader of Atlantis anymore, and the only thing that mattered was John.

She wasn't going to lose him.

The slice in her side ached, and the warm blood soaking her shirt told her that she needed medical attention. Teyla was bruised and bloodied as well, favoring her right ankle as they hurried. But neither complained, and neither slowed down. To do so was to sign his death warrant.

When they crashed through the last door on the left, they both stopped though, staring in horror. John's body sagged as he hung from chains in the wall, his bare chest cut from a whip. Six different guards turned at their intrusion, eyes widening in surprise.

That was as far as they got.

Elizabeth had always been a pacifist. But her trigger finger worked just fine as they fought his captors. She took down two before they got close enough to reach her with their hands, and she could hear Teyla fighting beside her. She forced herself to remember everything John and Ronon had taught her, and though it wasn't enough to defeat them, it was enough to buy them time.

Barely enough time. Ronon and Lorne burst into the room just as one of them got their hands around Elizabeth's throat. But then they were down and they weren't moving anymore, and she was in front of John, unchaining his wrists and cradling his face.

"'Lizabeth?" he muttered, his voice thick with pain.

"I'm here," she whispered.

He managed to smirk at her around the bruises. "My hero."

-----------------------------------

"Forever My Father" (Go Radio)

He avoided them all, but he should have known that Elizabeth wouldn't be deterred. If their places had been switched, he would have done the same thing. It scared him sometimes, how well they knew each other. How, sometimes, they knew what the other needed better than they did. It wasn't natural.

It was the most natural thing in the world.

She knew the history, even if she didn't know all of the stories. They had spent late nights talking in her office or in the kitchen, fighting back the nightmares even as they aired their demons. He'd never been much of a talker, and he still wasn't, but things just came out when Elizabeth was around. It felt like she already knew what was coming before the words left his mouth and that made it easier somehow.

As the casket lowered into the freshly disturbed ground, he felt her hand slip into his. It was warm and firm and everything he had found her to be. He ducked his head, unable to look at her even as he held on for dear life. She didn't say anything - she never really needed to - but she held him up just by standing next to him.

And when one tear slid down his cheek, she held him even tighter, keeping him tethered to her and anchored to the ground.

---------------------------------------------------------------

"Fix You" (Javier Colon)

It was three weeks later when she finally broke. He'd been keeping an extra eye on her ever since their talk that night, looking for the telltale cracks that would give him warning. But she was so damn good at hiding them that he almost missed it.

He went looking for her in the middle of the day and she was gone. Chuck said she had gone to her room for a minute, but she wasn't there when he checked, and quick calls to his team didn't find her, either.

Eventually, he found her on a lonely balcony, staring at the storm clouds looming over them and the rain heading their way.

"'Lizabeth," he said quietly, not wanting to startle her.

The rain reached them just as she broke.

He caught her before she hit the ground, arms wrapping around her and lowering her gently as he used his body to cocoon her. She clung to him and cried, and he felt her shudders rip through his own bones. Losing Carson, losing contact with Earth, the Wraith, the Replicators...it all tried to drown her in one fell swoop.

But he took the rain for her, letting it soak him. Kissing the top of her head, he held her together.

Just like he had promised.

"Locke'd Out Again" (Michael Giacchino, LOST)

He came through the Gate a new man.

He hated terms like that. Hated all the cliches that went along with getting a second chance at life. He faced down death almost every day, and he made sure not to let that be an excuse to do extremely stupid things afterward.

But today he had grown old. And it had sucked. Not because he was losing his life. Not because it hurt like hell. Not because he knew that Kolya was torturing Elizabeth and his team just as much as he was torturing him physically.

He had regrets.

And they weren't all out of his power to change, either. Which meant that he needed to cowboy up and do something before time took everything from him.

His gear was dropped the second he cleared the event horizon and she was right there, just like she always was. One hand found the back of her head and his lips found hers as though they were coming home. He kissed her with everything he had, crushing her to him, making sure she knew damn well just what he was getting at. He kissed her until they couldn't breathe and then just a second more, pulling back reluctantly.

"That wasn't what I expected," she whispered, the words oddly familiar.

"Get used to it," he murmured.

He kissed her again.

--------------------------------------------

"Gotten" (Slash feat. Adam Levine)

He was losing her. He wished he knew when it had started, but it was too late for that anyway. He saw it now, knew that if he waited too much longer, everything they had worked for would be gone. And he couldn't shake the nagging feeling that it would be all his fault.

But the hits just kept coming. Carson. Replicators. Wraith. Ellis. Now Ronon was in the infirmary after only barely surviving surgery and she wouldn't even look him in the eye. He needed her, and he was fairly certain that she needed him, and he couldn't seem to get within three feet of her.

The city demanded too much of his attention and it was another eight hours before he even had time to think straight, nevermind look for her. And when he finally found her, he surprised to find that she was beside Ronon's bed, half-asleep even as she kept watch over him. Her eyes were distant and haunted, and she looked so small that he wondered how she ever managed to stand under all this weight.

He came into the room quietly, afraid that she would see him and leave. But as he took a seat beside her, the look she gave him was one of anger and remorse and relief and worry. His hand was moving before he'd even had time to think and then their fingers were entwined.

He thought maybe he had caught her just in time.

------------------------------------------------------------------

"Til the End of Time" (Timothy Bloom feat. V)

First times weren't supposed to be like this. He had had more than his fair share of them, and they were never like this. They were fun, but they were awkward, both people learning about the other with each step that they took.

They'd never done this before, but he could read her body like the back of his hand, and it scared the shit out of him.

But she was moving against him, with him, around him, and it was exactly like it should have been. His wounds felt like they'd been stoppered and bandaged, healing right in front of his eyes. She touched and kissed and moved him, making it difficult to breathe even as she gave him a reason to keep on doing it.

He didn't understand it, but he never wanted it to stop.

He covered her body with his and kissed her, trying to tell her all those things. The words wouldn't come, but her eyes met his and he knew that the message was received and sent right back to him.

He shuddered as the fear left him and there was only her.

--------------------------------------------------------

"Tangled Up In You" (Staind)

John honestly wasn't sure he'd ever see the day Ronon would let himself move on from his demons and be happy. But here they were, standing at his wedding to Teyla, Elizabeth across from him and Halling saying the words. He'd never seen either of his friends so happy, and it filled him with a pride he hadn't known before.

"Now is the time," Halling continued, "when we open the floor to anyone else who wishes to pledge their lives together. It is not a small step, nor is it an easy one. But when it is time, it is time, and it should not be ignored."

John was looking right at Elizabeth when the words were said, and he was surprised to find himself asking a question with his eyes. She seemed surprised as well, quirking an eyebrow at him, but when he didn't look away, she smiled, giving him a small nod.

Then they were stepping forward as Ronon and Teyla moved aside, and her hands were in his as they stood before Halling. The words were said and repeated and deeper things were promised without ever being said at all, and suddenly he felt that click. Like he had finally caught up with his life and for once, he was exactly where he was supposed to be.

And when she kissed him, he knew that he was home.

LOLOLOLOL. I'm so glad you enjoyed them! The shuffle challenges always scare me, because of the short time you have to do them, but they're fun, too. And I adore Sparky.
